Enette Pauze made a conscious, purposeful intention half a dozen years ago. She gave up TV. Why you ask? She read that the average Canadian watches about 15 hours of TV per week and she asked herself what she could  do with an extra 15 hours of time. The answer was earn a PhD.  And so it was she began her trade – TV for PhD. – good call Enette, you did not miss anything on TV, but the world is a better place because of your gained knowledge.

Listen to the entire show here where Enette shares her expertise as a Partnership Broker and her experience making it all work as a mom, wife, businesswoman and contributor to her community:

Perfectly Designed

It’s true.  In six years I completed a PhD and had three babies, while running a successful consulting business. I never went on maternity leave, despite having two high risk pregnancies and being on bed rest for more than four months during the final stages of my doctoral program.  I defended my PhD six days before baby #3 arrived.

Be gentle in your judgements.

I don’t see myself as an over achiever, although I catch the stares and hear the condescending tones when people call me ‘supermom’.  To me, I’m just me.  I’m not trying to outdo anyone, or make up for what my parents couldn’t give me, or prove that I am equal to men.

No, I don’t own a cape.

I love learning.  I can’t seem to find pennies to pinch for a vacation, but I can always find the cash for a new book.

I love family.  You won’t find me socializing in public during stat holidays, but if there is a garden party at grandma’s, we’re there.

I love business.  I may forget to teach my kids the rules of the playground, but they understand the value of saving 25% of their allowance and why putting up a handwritten sign for a garage sale is a form of marketing.

I’m an entrepreneur, a serial student, a mom and everything else in between.  And no, the lady on the front page of the magazine isn’t better than me because she’s fit, fancy and famous.

I’ll never measure up to your standards, or ‘their standards’, or the standards of my kids. I haven’t discovered the mysterious utopia called work-life balance, and frankly, I don’t think it exists.

I’ve had seen enough death, turmoil, and tragedy to understand that I get one life, not three (or nine).

So, I’ve given up running around trying to fill up three different buckets, worrying which one is less full than the next.  I’m a CEO at home, a mom at work, and constantly, contagiously, curious.

I live one life, not three.
I have one bucket, called me.
I put love into it,
And pour love out of it.
All I really want is to be me.

My humble advice – give up trying to be balanced and instead just be you.  It’s what you are perfectly designed for.
