COLLINS: More than just a royal getaway
MAKE NO MISTAKE ABOUT IT — the visit to Canada by King Charles and Queen Camilla this week is a HUGE deal for our country. (Sorry for the ‘all caps’ — the Trump School of Writing creeping in).
Seriously, this visit, although short, sends a very blunt message to the U.S. that Canada is its own sovereign nation, capable of looking after its own affairs, with lots of support from Buckingham Palace and a vast network of other countries.
A monarch coming to read the Speech from the Throne has only happened twice before in Canada. Queen Elizabeth came in 1957, shortly after she was coronated, and again during the celebration of her 25th Anniversary as Queen.
Typically, the Monarchy doesn’t get officially involved in politics. That’s why this visit is so critical. It’s a way of showing support for Canadian sovereignty without having to give Donald Trump an official warning to “back off.”
