SD73 still on the fence about implementing a vaccine policy

KAMLOOPS — School District 73 (SD73) has yet to implement a vaccine policy for its staff members.

At its board meeting on Monday (Nov. 22), the school district reviewed the results of a recent staff survey regarding vaccines.

“It’s a highly polarizing issue. We’ve heard from both the extremes who say, ‘Absolutely not,’ and, ‘I’m for it,” said Rhonda Nixon, Superintendent at SD73.

“We wouldn’t be going forward with this step, if the employee executives, with whom we’ve had lots of conversation, and also our trustees weren’t confident that its reasonable to investigate further whether it would be possible,” Nixon explained.

SD73 staff will report back to the board with more information that clarifies how many employees are vaccinated or how many are not willing to provide proof of vaccination, voluntarily.

This information will help the board decide if it will implement a policy.

“It very well may be a good thing to do from a health perspective, but if it’s going to result in the closure of schools because we don’t have enough staff,” said Nixon, “that would not be a good enough reason to do it. The two pieces of information together are really important.”
