Freeland, Hunt to host Canadian-British press freedom summit this summer
OTTAWA — Canada and Britain will co-host an international summit in London this summer on the growing threats to freedom of the press, and to promote better protection of journalists.
Sources say Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland — a journalist before she entered politics — and her British counterpart Jeremy Hunt have worked on the idea for months. Canadian officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to discuss details.
Freeland’s office confirmed later Tuesday the two-day gathering, starting July 10, will include members of governments, civil society and journalists and will focus on protecting reporters from censorship, imprisonment, personal attacks and abuse.
“In any democracy, journalists must have the ability to report facts freely, to defend, expose and advance the truth without fear of retaliation, reprisal, violence or imprisonment,” Freeland said in a statement.
