TORONTO — Canada has been drawn in a group with Fiji, Ireland and Russia at the HSBC Sydney Sevens.

The Feb. 1-3 tournament is the third round of the World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series.

The Canadian women currently stand second in the standings after finishing third in Glendale, Colo., and second in Dubai. New Zealand tops the table after winning both stops. The U.S. is third and Australia fourth.

The top four teams at the end of the six-event season will secure automatic qualification to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Canada won bronze in 2016 in Rio.

The Sydney tournament features the 11 Series core teams plus Papua New Guinea, an invitational side.

New Zealand will play in Pool A alongside England, France and Papua New Guinea. Australia will look to defend its Sydney title starting in Pool C with the U.S., China and Spain.

The men head next to Hamilton, New Zealand, where Canada is in a pool with the host country, Spain and Japan for the Jan. 26-27 competition.

The 16-team men’s Sydney tournament runs Feb. 2-3.

The Canadian men stand 12th overall after two stops. The U.S. is first overall, followed by New Zealand, Fiji, England and South Africa.

Like the women, the top four men’s teams at the end of the season will automatically qualify for the Tokyo Olympics. The Canadian men did not make it to Rio in 2016 but their 2020 path through a North American qualifier would be eased if the Americans qualified automatically.
