Inner-preneurship

We are driven by our need to realize our full potential, to make a difference and to constantly learn and evolve.

I love the idea of inner-preneurship, businesses started to aid in our personal growth rather than that of a company’s. I know one of the reasons that I started my businesses, Your Life, Unlimited was to increase me personal fulfillment, satisfaction and social change through my work.

They say (whoever ‘they’ are) that we teach that which we most need to learn and in my case that is definitely so. Personal growth is something that I eat, sleep and breath and I’m always, always learning more about myself, being inspired by the world around me and sharing what I have learned with you. It jazzes me up! What’s jazzing you up these days.

On this weeks CJOB broadcast, my first guest Terry Kozlyk, shared what happened to him after a simple conversation turned into No Ordinary Journey  and gives talks about the importance of debriefing after events and situations that provide opportunity for growth.

Dr. Jackie Elliot shared her story of support, love and encouragement in her inspiring segment. Her advice for you as a patient, you are the driver of your health, not your doctor.

 Inner-preneurship – Your Calling into Leadership

Working in as many tech jobs as I have in my 30+ year career, I realized not many (if any) of those jobs tapped my true passion, creativity and potential. Recently I discovered how valuable volunteer involvement can be to invigorate that potential and bring to fruition one’s leadership skills. Such an opportunity presented itself when I volunteered and travelled to Vietnam with the Calgary based children’s charity, No Ordinary Journey Foundation (NOJF).

During our March mission, our team of 8 from Calgary Canada were also joined by experts from United States, Hungary and Australia. There were also 10 Gen Y Vietnamese professionals who joined us on different venues, acting as translators and superb cultural attaches. Thanks to social media, some came on-board as little as 2 weeks prior and others during our 3 week mission in Vietnam. Read more about that mission on my blogpost – Show #042 – Vietnam is No Ordinary Journey

From an initial thought, my offering went something like, “Hey Laverne, I met the manager of Shaw TV Calgary recently. I can ask if they would be interested in giving your foundation several minutes of air-time. Should I ask ?”. Emphathically, she replies “Yes”. After a 1 hour meeting, what follows is a formal application and acceptance for NOJF to produce a 30 minute documentary of their upcoming mission to Vietnam in March.

Here are several leadership lessons Terry learned on this volunteer mission;

Lesson #1 – “There is no I in TEAM”

Lesson #2 – “Keep job descriptions simple; like 1 or 2 lines”

Lesson #3 – “Don’t limit your contribution to your 1 or 2 line description above”

Lesson #4 – “Leaders aren’t always in the front”

Lesson #5 – “Always have a debrief where each team member has their say”

Are you one of those people which after several meanderings through a career don’t feel fulfilled, want to contribute and give something back to society?  Seek out a volunteer role with a charity close to your passion. You can get some ideas in this manifesto which took me 30 years to write – INNERpreneurship . . . The Rise of Self Destiny. Perhaps start a cause dear to your heart. Contribute your skills and know-how. Build a team of volunteers and get to know who you will be working with. It’s a great way to build your leadership skills while giving something back to society. Don’t let fear stop you from your true calling and passion.
