Do you do this every Friday?

People often ask me this question in regards to my Your Life, Unlimited radio show, which airs live every Friday evening.

The answer is Yep! Except for holidays or if I am away at a speaking engagement you will find me in the big, black leather chair at the CJOB studio each week for one reason – because I love it.

I love it because I get the chance to meet and interview interesting and inspiring people, I get to learn from smart and insightful people and I get to share their messages with you.  What could be better than all that!?

This week, I was thankful to learn from the 2012 Kiwanis Top Cop award winner Constable Kevin Gibson, Executive Director of  http://Status4.ca Lynne Williams and community activist Janine LeGal.

You can listen to our entire June 21, 2013 CJOB radio interview here as  a podcast: http://www.cjob.com/Shows/Episodes.aspx?PID=2553

I loved how Kevin explained that while we may see him in his uniform as a symbol of authority, he sees the uniform as a symbol of responsibility. If something goes wrong and he is in his jeans and t-shirt, no one expects him to take the lead, solve the problem or be in control but if something goes wrong when he is in his police uniform – people turn to him for help and assistance.  He take this very seriously and I believe it helps to keep him humble about his job that, as he says, is a privilege to do.  I also find it inspiring that after 25 years of policing that he is still hopeful about people and society in general.

It made me think about how we view our roles and positions of ‘power’ in our lives – when you have your parental hat on, you have authority and responsibility. When you have your business suit on – you have authority and responsibility. Thinking about coming from a place of responsibility vs coming from a authority may give us a different (and more positive) perspective on the situations that we deal with.

In this interview, Kevin talks about how he combined his love for music, passion for helping children and a tragic situation in the Police Service into something that will leave a lasting legacy. Lynne shares inspiring stories of how Status4 is making a huge difference in children’s lives and Janine shares how she has turned her birthdays into a magnificent events to benefit good causes all over the city (and she shares how she got over her fear of police!).

Enjoy the show!  Steph 🙂
