Another Reason to Love Paul Newman

Another reason to love the late Paul Newman! In an interview that happened to coincide with International Women’s Day, Susan Sarandon revealed that Newman once gave her part of his salary.

She told BBC 5 that she found out that her two male co-stars in 1998’s Twilight were getting paid the same as each other, but more than she was getting paid. When Newman learned of the disparity he told her he’d make up the difference. (Gene Hackman was the other co-star).

  • Sarandon said: [“Emma Stone once came forward and said she got equal pay, because her male stars insisted upon it and gave up something of theirs. That happened to me with Paul Newman at one point, when I did a film with him ages ago. They said it was ‘favored nations’, but they only meant the two guys. He stepped forward and said, ‘Well I’ll give you part of mine’. So, yeah, he was a gem.” (OC: … a gem. 0:25)]
  • The term “favored nations” means that producers agree to pay actors the same amount fo the same work.
