The Razzies, the best of the worst

Sad-face emoji! The Golden Raspberry Awards, a.k.a. The Razzies, celebrate the best of the worst every year in Hollywood. The Emoji Movie swept this year’s awards, earning the dubious honor of wining worst picture, screen combo, director and screenplay.

Fifty Shades Darker was also favored with two awards: Worst Supporting Actress (Kim Basinger) and Worst Remake, Rip-Off or Sequel.

• Tyler Perry earned worst actress award as Madea in Boo 2: A Madea Halloween and Tom Cruise won worst actor for The Mummy.
• The Razzies are traditionally announced the same weekend as the Oscars. The group has 1,000 voting members from every state (sans Montana) and 26 countries.

INDEPENDENT SPIRIT AWARDS

• The 2018 Film Independent Spirit Awards were held Saturday in Santa Monica. Nick Kroll and John Mulaney hosted the show, which is dedicated honoring independent filmmakers. Get Out won Best Feature, and Get Out also earned a Best Director nod for Jordan Peele.
• “It’s clear we are in the beginning of a renaissance right now where stories from the outsider, stories from the people in this room, the same stories that independent filmmakers have been telling for years are being honored and recognized and celebrated,” Peele said in his acceptance speech.
• Frances McDormand won for Best Female Lead in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, while Timothee Chalamet won Best Male Lead for Call Me By Your Name.
