20th Century Fox's War for the Planet of the Apes is coming in about where expected, with a $56.5 million opener, the second-best for the franchise, over the first installment Rise of the Planet of the Apes ($54.8 million) and behind Dawn of the Planet of the Apes ($72.6 million).
The threequel is expected to see the most play overseas where Rise (63%) and Dawn (70%) earned the most.
- Meanwhile, Sony/Marvel's Spider-Man: Homecoming brought in an estimated $45.2 million for its second weekend, lower than the industry expected and representing a 61% slide over its opening weekend.
- Wonder Woman continues to crash through new barriers and is chasing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 to become this summer's highest-grossing film. Industry analysts say it may happen this week, with just a $5.9 million gap to close.
