WILLIAMS LAKE — High stream flows and flooding have prompted the Cariboo Regional District to activate its Emergency Operations Centre (EOC).

“We’re just activated here to support, to provide sandbags as needed and be available if people need support if they’re experiencing any flooding,” says spokesperson Emily Epp.  “Also, if their access is cut off due to flooding, we’re just asking people to stay in place and to stay safe, but if they need any assistance they can give us a call.”

The CRD’s public information line at 1 (866) 759-4977 between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. After hours residents are asked to call the Provincial Emergency Reporting Line at 1 (800) 663-3456.

Epp says there are a couple areas in the region of concern at the moment.

“There’s a dam on Rose Lake that they’re doing some controlled water releases so that’s an area we’re monitoring. There are also areas experiencing some flooding up in the Nazko region.”

She says there are a few tips people should keep in mind, such as:

  • Prepare personal emergency supply kits for your home, car and work
  • Have a grab-and-go kit ready if you have to leave your home quickly
  • Keep important papers in watertight containers and have a record of your valuables in a safe place.

Sandbags are also available through the EOC. To learn about proper sandbagging techniques click here.
