VANCOUVER —    A 16-hour standoff ended last night near Vancouver’s Yaletown district with the arrest of a 34-year-old man.

Police say the Vancouver resident was safely taken into custody in an apartment suite after he hid there early yesterday morning, prompting officers to surround the area and divert traffic until the emergency response team moved in at about eight last night.

The incident began at about 4 a.m. yesterday with a disturbance involving three people in a nearby apartment and, as police arrived, one man fled to the apartment where the standoff occurred.

A release from Constable Jason Doucette says a 29-year-old Coquitlam man and 25-year-old Whistler woman arrested at the original location remain in custody as the investigation continues.
