KAMLOOPS — For many women, purchasing feminine hygiene products is an activity that doesn’t require much thought, but for some women it could mean giving up a meal to afford these monthly necessities.

The United Way Thompson Nicola Cariboo and United Steelworkers Local 1-417 will be collecting menstrual products throughout the month of April as part of their Tampon Tuesday campaign.

The United Steelworkers were inspired to participate after hearing of the success of the drive in the Lower Mainland.

“As a woman I didn’t even put two and two together that women have to choose between food or feminine hygiene products, and talking to the guys about it I thought that it was really good to have a couple guys opinions in there,” said First Vice President Tara Cavanagh. “And I think that’s where it’s really taken off, is it’s kind of turned into a really serious thing, but they’ve kind of brought a bit of humour to it. Men are actually going out and buying tampons by the box loads.”

The goal is to collect $10,000 worth of product to be distributed on May 2.

Donations of tampons, pads, or the money to purchase these items can be dropped off at the United Steelworkers office on Vernon Ave., or the United Way on Victoria St.

“Once all these items are collected we’re going to be distributing to agencies that offer drop-in services for women,” said Sarah Sandholm, Senior Resource Development Manader with the United Way.

“So, we want to make sure that people can just walk in and get these items for free. Ultimately we want to be advocates that these items are more affordable or free for women. We don’t want them to have to rely on going to an agency to get them.”
