Kamloops Naturalist Club to host annual grasslands cleanup this weekend

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops residents are invited to take part in the Third Annual Grasslands Cleanup this Sunday.

It’s being organized by the Kamloops Naturalist Club in partnership with other community groups in town.

Participants are asked to meet out on the Dew Drop at 9:00 a.m. For a map of the location go to the Kamloops Naturalist Club Facebook page or see one of the photos above.

Vice-President Frank Ritcey says the cleanup serves two purposes.

“One, it cleans up the grounds but it also brings attention to the grasslands and the fact that that is a closed area. By closed, I mean closed to off-road travel and it’s really important we get the word out to people to drive on the designated areas because they are destroying the grasslands out there.”

He estimates over 30,000 pounds of garbage was collected over the first two cleanup events.

“Including things like building materials, concrete cement, car bodies, TV’s, couches. You name it, people take it out there to dump it.”

Though mind-boggling to him, Ritcey figures those who litter may do so because they want to avoid paying the tipping fee or feel too inconvenienced to drive their garbage across town to the landfill.

He adds it is tough to prosecute the guilty offenders.

“We’ve found garbage with addresses on it but unless you catch them in the act it’s hard to get them charged with anything.”

Ritcey says there will be free food and beverages for everyone who takes part and says there’s an agreement in place with the TNRD to ensure everyone receives a tipping waiver for the day.
