Kamloops RCMP nab same distracted driver twice in 45 minutes

KAMLOOPS — Some people just don’t learn.

A Kamloops RCMP officer issued a pair of distracted driving tickets yesterday afternoon – to the same driver.

Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says the two traffic stops took place about 45 minutes apart and just a few blocks away from each other.

Shelkie says this lesson will be an expesnive one for the male driver.

“Including all the point penalties on his driver’s license, these two tickets may cost the driver up to $1,400. As well, his driver’s license may be reviewed by the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles and he could face a possible prohibition from driving.”

Results of an enforcement blitz released yesterday show distracted driving is still a widespread reality on Kamloops streets, but Shelkie says catching the same driver twice in such close succession is uncommon.

“It is rare to find somebody who’s using their cellphone after they’ve been issued a violation ticket. That’s a substantial amount of money; almost $400. But within 45 minutes, to have that person use their cellphone again, it’s quite a hit to the wallet.”
