Kamloops 4×4 Club president in support of stricter off-road vehicle rules

KAMLOOPS — The president of the Kamloops 4×4 Club is lauding the BC government’s imposition of stricter penalties for off-road vehicle users who increase the wildfire risk. 

“I think it’s a good thing,” said Charles Denbigh.

Last week, Forest Minister Doug Donaldson announced certain wildfire-related penalties have increased to $100,000. 

Denbigh says he has already been encouraging responsible off-road vehicle use among the 4×4 Club’s membership. 

“During the fires last year, even prior to the fire ban, we were recommending that our members stay off trails and stuff because the fire risk was extremely high,” he said. “I don’t see that kind of environmental thing changing anytime soon.”

Fines could reach up to $10,000 if an off-road vehicle is operating without a spark arrestor in an area at risk of wildfire, and the fines increase if a fire is sparked. 

Denbigh says the steeper fines may deter some from breaking the rules.
