KAMLOOPS — Kamloops Mounties have revealed the cause of a fire that gutted a duplex in Westsyde last week.

Sgt. Brandon Buliziuk says the fire was sparked by “youth playing,” and he notes the investigation will not result in a charge recommendation.

“It’s been determined that possibly some youth may have been playing with some material that led to the ignition of the fire.”

“Based on the totality of the information we’ve gathered, investigators have determined that there’s not enough information to substantiate what would be a criminal offence. Therefore, we’re not going to be recommending any charges to the BC Prosecution Service.”

The former Habitat for Humanity home was engulfed in flames in minutes.

Kamloops Fire Rescue personnel rushed to the scene, but couldn’t extinguish the fire before it did significant damage to both units.

Buliziuk says this is a stark reminder that playing with fire and potential accelerants is a very bad idea.

“Any type of chemical-heat combination that could lead to fire is dangerous. It’s surprising how quick those situations can escalate and become beyond the control of the people that are playing with those types of materials.”
