KELOWNA — Police say a pickup truck stolen in Armstrong was used in a series of hit and run collisions this morning before a suspect was arrested by an off-duty cop.

Mounties received numerous calls around 6:26 am about a white Ford F-150 pickup travelling in an erratic and dangerous manner before it crashed on Highway 97 near Beaver Lake Road at the Lake Country-Kelowna border.

Police continued to get calls from the public about the suspect being seen at various sites throughout Rutland.

“An off duty RCMP officer became involved, when he witnessed the driver of that suspect vehicle commit an offence,” says RCMP Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey. “The suspect driver eventually stopped in the 400 block of Gerstmar Road and fled from his vehicle. The off duty RCMP officer identified himself as a police officer and a struggle ensued, during which the officer was allegedly assaulted.”

Police later confirmed the Ford F-150 had been reportedly stolen from Armstrong.

“The criminal investigation remains in its early stages, as police prepare to conduct at least a dozen interviews with both witnesses and victims,” says O’Donaghey. “Our officers have yet to positively identify the young adult male they currently have in police custody.”

Once identified the suspect could face several potential charges. He remains in police custody.

Anyone who witnessed any of the multiple crashes or observed the driving behaviour of the Ford F150 pickup truck is asked to contact the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300.
