100 Mile House mill to temporarily suspend production

100 MILE HOUSE — As if 100 Mile House hasn’t gone through enough following last year’s weeks-long evacuation due to the devastating wildfires.

Now word from Norbord that it plans to suspend production at its OSB mill in 100 Mile House due to a shortage of wood.

The company says the wildfires last summer that damaged the logging areas surrounding the mill and severe weather conditions this winter have combined to hurt its ability to secure a sufficient wood supply.

Norbord expects the suspension to start on about May 14 and to continue for approximately one month.

“It’s disappointing but understandable with the year we’ve had,” said 100 Mile House Mayor Mitch Campsall. “We’ve had a pretty terrible year with last year’s wildfires and on top of that we ended up with a snowfall second to none.”

The suspension of the mill will affect 150 employees and he says it will be a blow to the local economy.

“You’re darn right it’s going to hurt. The community, the employees especially. But it’s also going to hurt our businesses as well because if people aren’t working they’re not spending money.”

Campsall says the community plans to lobby the provincial government to “help secure us some timber supply.”

Norbord estimates the curtailment will hurt its second-quarter results by approximately US $5million.
