JUNEAU, ALASKA—  The father of 24-year-old Squamish rock climber Marc-Andre Leclerc says his son has died while scaling a new route up the Mendenhall Towers, just north of Juneau, Alaska.

Serge Leclerc posted the message late last night — just hours after rescue crews were able to get their first good look at the north face of the main tower, and eight days after the men were last heard from.

Marc-Andre Leclerc was considered a gifted climber while Johnson was described as knowing the Mendenhall Towers “like nobody else.”

Alaska State Troopers are expected to release more information about the case later today.
