Kamloops MLAs to pen letter of support for TRUSU Fund the Future campaign

KAMLOOPS — Relieved and encouraged. 

That’s how TRU Students’ Union Vice-President External Cole Hickson is feeling following a meeting with MLAs Todd Stone and Peter Milobar Friday. 

Organizers of the Fund the Future campaign, which calls for equitable funding for Thompson Rivers University, were hoping to gain the local MLAs’ support. 

“We made an ask to get something in writing and they eagerly were able to come up with a joint letter of support, that we probably will get back from them pretty soon,” Hickson said. “That would just add a major voice on top of the already 20 plus organizations around our region, which will really help us when we go to the Minister of Advanced Education and make this ask for a re-evaluation of the TRU funding formula.” 

Hickson says the funding formula has remained the same for more than 13 years, while TRU has continued to grow.

He says the Fund the Future Campaign will continue to seek additional support before presenting to the Ministry of Advanced Education. 

“We’re still going to continue going hard by trying to present to as many organizations, municipalities, community groups in our Thompson-Nicola region,” Hickson said, “just to make sure we have a lot of momentum and ensure we have the community behind us when we go to make these asks.”
