Winter warming trend increasing avalanche risk

KAMLOOPS — A change in the weather is creating some instability at higher elevations.

Mike Conlan with Avalanche Canada says there are a few weak layers of snow buried at and below tree-line elevations in the North and South Columbia regions.

The snow conditions coupled with warmer weather is increasing the risk of avalanche in those areas.

“We’ll see warmer temperatures as well as some new snow that’s coming with that,” Conlan said. “These changes could allow for the snow above the weak layers to gain some slab properties and this could be a dangerous situation for people recreating in the mountains.”
