KAMLOOPS — The ninth annual Heap the Honda Children’s Book Drive launches this weekend.

The book drive has collected more than 80,000 books in the past eight years, which have been distributed to Bright Red Bookshelf locations throughout the city.

Books collected through Heap the Honda are also distributed at ABC Family Literacy Day at the Henry Grube Education Centre on January 20.

The book drive runs from Jan. 6-27, and Fiona Clare with Literacy in Kamloops says there are a variety of ways to donate your new or gently used children’s books.

“Throughout the month of January they can drop off their books at Kamloops Honda, or at either the Kamloops or North Kamloops Libraries, the Henry Grube Education Centre, Kamloops This Week, or at any Bright Red Bookshelf location,” Clare said.

Children’s books will also be collected at the Kamloops Blazers game on Jan. 27 during their ‘Bring a Children’s Book’ event.

With 10,000 to 15,000 books collected each year, Honda and Literacy in Kamloops are hoping for another successful year.

“Last year the truck was filled multiple times,” said Rhonda Rivers with Kamloops Honda. “We went down to the Blazers game, we filled the back of a CRV, and also filled the back of a truck, I think we got about a thousand books or something from the Blazers game last year, so it was very successful.”

The Heap the Honda launch event takes place at the Kamloops Honda showroom at 10 a.m. Saturday.
