B.C. has lowest jobless rate in Canada

VANCOUVER —    The number of people looking for work across the country fell to its lowest level in more than 40 years last month, while B-C continues to hold the title of lowest jobless rate in Canada.

    Statistics Canada has released December’s employment numbers, showing the national jobless rate dropped to 5.7 per cent from 5.9 per cent in November, to reach its lowest mark since 1976.

    Unemployment in B-C dipped two-tenths of a point last month to 4.6 per cent, edging out Quebec — at 4.9 per cent — for the lowest rate.

    The figure in Victoria nudged up one basis point in December to 3.4 per cent, but the city maintains the lowest rate in the province, ahead of Vancouver at 4.1 per cent, Abbotsford at 4.7 and Kelowna at 6.3.
