Cyclist struck on highway in Valleyview

KAMLOOPS —A cyclist had to be transported to hospital for treatment after colliding with a semi on the Trans Canada last night.

In a news release, Corporal Darren King says the incident happened about 6:30 PM last night at the intersection of the Trans Canada Highway and Vicars Road in Valleyview.

The semi was heading east in the fast lane through the intersection on a green light when the southbound cyclist crossed on a red light across the westbound lanes and into the eastbound lane where he was struck. The rider was thrown from the bicycle, sustained significant injuries and was subsequently taken to Royal Inland Hospital. The 42-year old man was not wearing a helmet.. 
The highway was closed briefly as emergency crews attended. Corporal King says speed and alcohol are not believed to have been factors in the collision. Police are continuing their investigation.
