Multiple collisions close Coquihalla south of Merritt

KAMLOOPS – Update: According to Drive BC, the Coquihalla Highway has reopened in both directions though a travel advisory remains in effect.

Update: The Coquihalla Highway remains closed in both directions between Hope and Merritt.

RCMP Cst. Mike Halskov with E Division Traffic Services says “there are currently several vehicle incidents along the route, although none are believed to be fatal.”

“The weather conditions are currently poor and expected to worsen overnight as a major winter storm moves through the area.”

A travel advisory is in effect and motorists are asked to avoid the Coquihalla and detour via Highway 1 or Highway 3 as it is not known when the highway will reopen

A series of accidents has closed the Coquihalla Highway southbound at the Coldwater Interchange south of Merritt.

Details of the crash haven’t been released though a detour is available via Highway 8 and Highway 1. An update on the situation is expected at 2 p.m.

The Merritt RCMP confirmed to CFJC Today the closure is due to “multiple motor vehicle accidents.”

BC Emergency Health Services says it has transported three patients to hospital “in stable condition.”

Drive BC has also issued a travel advisory for the Coquihalla in both directions between Merritt and Hope due to the heavy snow expected to continue into this evening.

Travellers are advised to exercise caution, be prepared for potential delays, and consider alternate routes.
