SPCA: Kamloops seized horses on the mend

KAMLOOPS — Good news regarding the health of the nine horses seized from a Shuswap Road property earlier this month.

The horses were captured over concerns the horses weren’t being properly fed.

“The animals seem to be recovering well,” says Senior Manager of Cruelty Investigations Shawn Eccles. “Four of the horses have been adopted out outside of Kamloops and the other five are in foster homes.”

Eccles says the SPCA is considering pressing charges.

“And in either case, it would be a matter of causing unnecessary pain or suffering to an animal or willfully failing to provide adequate food, water and shelter to an animal under the Criminal Code, or allowing or permitting an animal to be in distress under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.”

If the previous owners are convicted, penalties could range from a fine of $75,000 under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and two years in jail to up to five years in jail under the Criminal Code.

“And in both cases, we could be looking at prohibition of owning an animal up to a lifetime,” says Eccles.
