A house fire in Nanaimo Tuesday afternoon led to the discovery of three bodies inside, local officials confirm.

Multiple emergency crews responded to calls of a fire at 754 Nicol St. just after 12:30 p.m.

Fire crews were able to suppress the fire but were still dealing with hot spots late afternoon.

When crews went inside the home, they found three deceased people inside. Members of the BC Coroners Service removed the bodies and are investigating the cause of their deaths.

RCMP confirmed the three bodies found were two adults and a seven-year-old girl, but would not say what their relationship to each other was.

“This is a terrible tragedy to hit our community,” Nanaimo RCMP Cpl. Jon Stuart said in a release. “We are working with the fire department to investigate this incident.”

There is no word yet on how the fire started. Officials say an investigation won’t be able to start until Wednesday morning, because the home is still too hot to enter.

RCMP said the investigation may take a significant amount of time due to the case’s complexity.
