KAMLOOPS — In a bid to aid firefighting efforts, the BC Wildfire Service has amended an area restriction around the Elephant Hill wildfire.

The amendent went into effect at 3 p.m. Wednesday and will remain in place until Oct. 31, 2017.

“The modified area restriction is in place to protect public safety and to ensure the safety of firefighting personnel,” reads a statement from the BC Wildfire Service.

The area restriction applies to all Crown land within the geographic areas shown in the map above.

Under this order, people must stay away from the restricted area unless they have written authorization to do so. Exceptions to that rule are if a person:

  • is travelling to or from his residence that is not under an evacuation order,
  • using a highway as defined in the Transporation Act,
  • travelling as a person acting in an official capacity,
  • travelling for the purpose of supporting wildfire suppression activities,
  • engaging and/or particpating in a commercial activity within the regular course of the person’s business or employment on private or leased lands,

The area restriction does not apply to private land, the garbage dump or transfer station. It modifies an area restriction put in place Sept. 3, 2017.
