KAMLOOPS — The President of the Kamloops Thompson Teachers’ Association is hopeful the new NDP government will listen to School District 73’s cry for more capital dollars.

“John Horgan has been very open about saying he believes more funding needs to go towards public schools,” said Amanda Jensen. “I guess time will tell.”

Jensen says she was impressed with the booklet the board recently presented to Education Minister Rob Fleming outlining Kamloops capital shortfall.

Under the Liberals 16 year reign the city received $10.7 million in education funding compared to Kelowna who received $114.7-million.

“I’m happy the district did that, it’s very comprehensive and well done,” said Jensen.

She says the KTTA remains firm that reopening schools is the best option to ease enrollment pressure should the district receive more money from the province.

“I acknowledge it being an exorbitant amount of work to look into redrawing the boundaries and bussing kids to different schools but we believe that students shouldn’t be in portables,” said Jensen. “They’re not a comfortable or suitable place for kids to be learning. They’re cold in the winter, hot in the summer and from what we’ve seen, don’t have washroom facilities.”
