Weather could help crews begin to win the war on Elephant Hill wildfire

GREEN LAKE, B.C. — Mother Nature is giving firefighters a chance to begin to stomp out the Elephant Hill wildfire.

Cooler temperatures and sporatic rain is forecast throughout the Cariboo region this weekend.

Information Officer Noelle Kekula calls the forecast prime firefighting weather.

“It has cooled a lot in the last few days,” said Kekula. “Right now, we’re only seeing Rank 1 and Rank 2 fire behaviour. That means firefighters can really focus on strengthening that control line as opposed to always trying to predict where the head of the fire is going to take off again.”

Kekula says the size of the blaze hasn’t grown much in the last few days.

It remains at 192-thousand hectares in size and 50 per cent contained.

Today, crews continue to work securing the control lines with equipment and hand ignitions. The north control line (Tin Cup Lake to Jack Frost Lake, Jack Frost Lake to Sheridan Lake and Sheridan Lake to Rayfield Valley) is where many of the resources are working.

Crews are working in the Brigade Creek and Tobacco Creek areas removing fuel and strengthening the control line.

Hihium and Young Lakes are monitored and remains quiet.

Conservation Officers and RCMP boats are on Green and Sheridan Lakes. Members will be patrolling for people in the evacuated area.

453 firefighters, 15 helicopters, and 87 pieces of equipment are working on the monstrous fire Saturday.

Highway 24 remains closed.
