Evacuations grow as Elephant Hill fire rages to the north

KAMLOOPS — The Thompson-Nicola Regional District has expanded an evacuation order this morning as the north flank of the Elephant Hill wildfire rages out of control.

The new order affects two properties to the west of Eagan Lake.

The Elephant Hill fire is now listed at 192,725 hectares in size.

Highway 24 remains closed in the area.

According to the BC Wildfire Service, crews will conduct a 650-hectare burnoff operation on the south side of Green Lake, a task that will increase the amount of smoke visible in the area.

The burnoff is meant to “create a clear and safer perimeter where ground crews can work.”

In addition, crews are using a boat provided by the Conservation Officer Service to access structures along Sheridan Lake, in order to assess and secure them.
