KAMLOOPS — It’s hard to believe it’s September already. With fall coming fast, all those fun summer activities like camping, boating, and golfing are coming to an end. Here in Kamloops, this long weekend is a chance for sun seekers to hold onto summer for just a little bit longer. Out at the Tournament Capital Ranch, over 80 slow-pitch teams are in town for the NSA World Series, just one of the many events taking place for those hoping to cling to the final days of summer.

The timing couldn’t be better for a slow-pitch tournament. This weekend, the Tournament Capital Ranch is hosting the NSA Co-Ed Slo-pitch World Series, an event which will see over 80 teams competing for thousands of dollars in prize money.

“We’ll be anywhere between 1200 and 1500 out and around all the diamonds,” NSA Executive Vice President Ewan Webster said.

And with only 10 local teams taking part, that means the bulk of those playing have come in from out of town. According to Monica Dickinson with Tourism Kamloops, an event like this means money injected into the local economy.

“It’s heads and beds for us,” Dickinson explained. “Overnight stays, meals in local restaurants, it’s supplies and groceries at our local grocery stores, it’s fuel at our gas stations. It resonates throughout the community.”

The smoky skies and forest fire season has certainly had an impact on tourism in the city this summer. The high number of evacuees housed here in Kamloops has gone a long way to offset some of the losses the smoky days might have caused for local businesses.

“The summer has gone by so quickly,” Dickinson said. “Thankfully it’s endless summer here in Kamloops,  so we look forward to more spectacular summer blue skies, sunny weather into September.”

Back out at the Ranch, those sunny skies are shining through for the slow-pitch players. According to Webster, that endless summer is one of the draws that brought the World Series event to the city’s facilities.

“We’re really excited and happy to be in Kamloops.”
