KAMLOOPS — A Kamloops RCMP officer is recovering after being injured during an arrest yesterday.

The officer was working in the 400-block of Tranquille Road, arresting a woman for breach of probation when she became violent, punching the Mountie repeatedly in the head.

Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says the officer responded by using a conducted energy weapon to subdue the woman, and calling for backup.

Shelkie notes RCMP are recommending some new charges, thanks to the woman's behaviour.

"Police officers often do meet with resistance when they're arresting somebody, but this one was quite aggressive and was throwing punches. We're definitely hoping to proceed with charges of assaulting a police officer," said Shelkie.

The officer's injuries are not considered life-threatening.
