KAMLOOPS — The BC Wildfire Service has taken the strongest measures yet to keep people away from areas where they could start new wildfires.

As of 1:30 this afternoon, public access to Crown lands within the Cariboo Fire Centre is completely prohibited.

This builds on earlier restrictions to burning activities and off-road vehicle use.

There are exceptions for commercial purposes and those travelling to their homes or using highways.

The Cariboo Fire Centre encompasses an area from the Cottonwood River near Quesnel in the north to Loon Lake near Clinton in the south.

Officials say the prohibition may remain in place for several weeks.
