GlobalMedic providing cleanup kits, free laundry service to evacuees

KAMLOOPS — GlobalMedic volunteers are providing cleanup kits to evacuees today (Aug 2).

300 buckets have been packed full of household cleaners and supplies to be handed out at the Emergency Reception Centre in Kamloops.

“It just makes it a little easier, one less thing for them to worry about picking up at the store, hopefully just get them in, get them cleaned up and hopefully back to a normal life really soon,” said GlobalMedic team lead David Sakaki.

For many, quick evacuation orders didn’t allow much time to pack up clothing, which is why GlobalMedic is also working to provide a free laundry service at McCleaners Laundromat.

“We’re also working with McCleaners Laundromat in town, and Tide Loads of Hope,” Sakaki said. “We are providing free laundry service for evacuees. All they have to do is stop by, drop off their laundry, come back in a couple hours and it’s all washed, folded, and ready to go for them, free of charge.”

Sakaki said around 1,500 evacuees had utilized the service to date.
