Kamloops celebrates National Aboriginal Day

KAMLOOPS — Community members came together to celebrate Indigenous history, culture, and traditions for National Aboriginal Day today (Jun 21).

The first of two events locally was held at Riverside Park, where traditional dances provided some entertainment.

Tables were set up around the park to showcase local artisans, community organizations, and face painting.

Colleen Lucier, executive director of Lii Michif Otipemisiwak Family and Community Services, said it was the first time the event had been back at Riverside Park in a number of years.

“The Kamloops Aboriginal Friendship Society, Lii Michif Otipemisiwak, White Buffalo, and Two Rivers Metis Society, we’ve been working together for a number of years now, along with many community partners to bring as many community members together as we can,” Lucier said. “So bringing it to Riverside Park with the support of the city of Kamloops … we’re just shocked at the amount of people and the schools that have taken time to bring their students to participate.”

While the mood was celebratory at the park, Lucier said the day also recognizes the years of injustice toward indigenous people.

“To me it’s all connected with reconciliation, and our commitment to work together to heal the wounds of the past, and move forward in a better direction for all First Nations, Inuit, Metis people,” Lucier said. “I don’t think we can deny there’s been a lot of hardship and trauma, and we need to move forward in a good way by recognizing the past, but celebrating and honouring where we are today.”

A second event is being held at the Tk’emlups Indian Band Powwow Grounds until 10:30 p.m.
