Kamloops-Thompson School Board sets spring break back to one week

KAMLOOPS — Parents in the Kamloops-Thompson School District now know exactly how long their spring break will be next year.

District officials have been negotiating a potential two-week break with the Kamloops-Thompson Teachers’ Association, but announced today those negotiations were not successful.

Superintendent Alison Sidow says the Board of Education wanted to ensure it could be done without losing instructional days.

Sidow says the board wasn’t interested in adding a few minutes to each school day, but made several other proposals that could have been viable.

“We offered some options, such as: moving professional development days outside of the regular start of school, as well as blending Easter with Spring Break. Unfortunately, we did not come to an agreement,” said Sidow.

But KTTA President David Komljenovic says the district only had one proposal and didn’t seem willing to do much negotiating.

“The district had issued a letter very late in the day about engaging in negotiations,” said Komljenovic. “We only had two sessions, really, to negotiate. We came back yesterday looking at some further negotiations, and instead the district said the parties were too far apart and they walked away from the table.”

The 2018 spring break will take place March 19-23.

Komljenovic says KTTA will propose to the BC Teachers Federation that a province-wide standard be included in bargaining for the next contract, which is due in 2019.
