Sewer work expected to snarl traffic in Brocklehurst starting Monday

KAMLOOPS — The project replacing a major sewage pipe north of the Thompson River is moving into its final phase, but this one will be the most noticeable to Kamloops residents.

Starting Monday (May 29), crews will begin to dig up the gravity main beneath Tranquille Road from Aviation Way to Crestline Street in Brocklehurst.

City of Kamloops Capital Projects Manager Darren Crundwell says it’s a milestone for the multi-million dollar project.

“It started in about February, but we’re now at the stage where we are going to be impacting Tranquille Road,” said Crundwell.

“The main itself is very deep at that location so we are going to be impacting a lot of the road. For the next eight to 12 weeks it will be down to single-lane, alternating (traffic) and there will be detours in place.”

Crundwell says the existing sewer main is nearly 60 years old, and reaching the end of its useful life.

“We’re out there because of the condition of the pipe. It was put in in the 1960s. It’s functioned well, but we’re at the point where we can’t afford a failure. That is the main that services the whole North Shore, so about 55,000 residents. This is the very end of the project, but unfortunately the most impactful (part).”

Traffic will still get through during construction, but Crundwell says detouring around the work zone is not a bad idea.

“It shouldn’t be too congested but at certain times, if people are worried about having to wait a few minutes, please try and use alternate routes. It helps the construction, as well.”
