Lower Nicola cut off from City of Merritt following extreme flooding

UPDATE: BC Hydro says it is estimating the power being restored to the Lower Nicola region by 6:30 p.m. tonight.

Access to the City of Merritt remains cut-off.

EARLIER:

MERRITT, B.C. — The entire village of Lower Nicola remains cut off from the City of Merritt due to extreme flooding.

Guerchon Creek breached its banks late Saturday with water levels rising significantly overnight.

According to callers to the newsroom, both bridges connecting Lower Nicola to the rest of the city were washed out Sunday morning.

Power has also been knocked out to the entire region. 

Numerous emergency personnel on scene surveying the situation.
