KAMLOOPS — They may have wheels but don’t expect Kamloops new mobile injection sites to be freely scouring the city.

According to Rae Samson, Administrator for Mental Health and Substance Use for Interior Health, officials are required to undergo a lengthy consultation process with numerous community groups before parking their wheels.

“We undergo extensive consultation with people who will use the service most importantly, as well all the stakeholders involved in the process,” said Samson. “This includes RCMP,  first responders, neighborhoods, business associations and the City of Kamloops. What we’ve agreed upon as a community is we will start in the North Shore and South Shore Ask Wellness locations since people are already using drugs in those areas.”

Samson says the converted motorhomes, one of the first models in North America valued at more than $250,000, are expected to roll into the city mid-April.
