TRU graduates cashing in on tourism industry

KAMLOOPS — Tourism is quickly becoming the ‘go-to’ industry for TRU graduates. 

With 12 tourism-related companies at this year’s TRU job fair, career counselor Larry Iles says more students are becoming aware of the vast opportunities within the field.

“Tourism hires every type of student that we have,” said Iles. “Sun Peaks for example, hires welders, millwrights, electricians, food and beverage people, accountants, and human resource people. It’s such a multi-faceted program and discipline.”

Iles says tourism remains one of TRU’s top employers, with the campus offering a diploma and degree program.

According to Statistics Canada, B.C saw a 12% increase in international visitors from 2015 to 2016, with 2.3 million people visiting the province.
