School District 73 staff to receive training on using naloxone kits

KAMLOOPS — In the wake of increasing overdoses across the province, School District 73 is getting ready to roll out life-saving naloxone kits in the coming weeks.

Two naloxone kits will soon be available at each of the district’s secondary schools — with two trained staff able to administer the drug in the case of an overdose on school grounds.

The overwhelming number of overdoses and deaths from illicit drug use put the district on alert, knowing it has to be ready in case of such emergency.

“Interior Health, at the end of October, let schools know that we’d be able to obtain naloxone kits if we determined our settings to be high-risk, or if we had possible high-risk populations at our schools,” said Director of Student Support Services Trish Smillie.

“We know it’s an important issue right now in B.C. and we’re doing everything we can in order to assist the prevention of overdoses. Even though most of schools aren’t high-risk settings, it’s still a good opportunity for us to serve our community.”

Two staff members from each secondary school in the district will have a training session on Monday, February 20, receiving hands-on experience from ASK Wellness, which has been contracted to show staff how to use a naloxone kit.

“The training lasts about an hour,” Smillie noted. “The staff will have an opportunity to practice with naloxone kits, get to use the kits, and practice injecting on lemons.”

Naloxone kits will be handed out to secondary schools shortly after the training on February 20.
