KAMLOOPS, B.C — Relief is officially on the way for the Kamloops / Thompson School District.

School District 73 Board Chair Meghan Wade says they’ve begun the first phase in hiring more than 30 full-time teachers throughout the district in an effort to improve class size and composition.

The hiring is part of Education Minister Mike Bernier’s $50 million funding announcement earlier this month to go towards hiring 1,100 teachers across the province.

School District 73 received approx. 1.3 million dollars.

Wade says hiring will be a two-part process, with approximately 20 jobs for teachers and learning assistance staff already posted on the district’s website.

“Phase one involves our middle schools and secondary schools and our priority elementary schools. And once those positions are filled and we know the exact dollar amount of doing those, phase two will roll out focusing on the rest of the elementary schools.”

Kamloops-Thompson Teachers’ Association President David Komljenovic says the announcement is a step in the right direction.

“I’m of a mixed opinion whether it was enough, but certainly it’s better than what the current situation was like.”

Komljenovic says the district would need to hire 70 teachers in order to meet the the union’s 2001 collective agreement numbers, adding he’s hopeful the district will reach the goal by September.
