KAMLOOPS — With the New Year seeing an unusually high number of influenza cases in the Nicola Thompson Region, as well 11 suspected flu-related deaths, Interior Health is reminding the public to wash their hands often.

According to Medical Health Officer Kamran Goldmohammadi, washing your hands for one to two minutes on a regular basis is the best line of defence against the virus, especially after being out in public.

“It’s important to follow if you’re in public places, public areas,” said Goldmohammadi. “It’s a habit. If you can follow it, it will significantly reduce your risk.. Basically, that is the point-of-entry for viruses to get into your system,” said Goldmohammadi.

He adds adults can spread respiratory viruses for up to four days after falling ill, with children able to spread the virus for an even longer period of time.
