VANCOUVER —  While Canada’s unemployment rate was up last month, Western provinces saw their rates head in the opposite direction.

And B.C.’s rate was the best in the country, dropping to 5.8 percent from 6.1 percent in November.

Alberta’s rate was down a full half a point, to 8.5 percent, hopefully an indication that the economy in that province is on its way back to a stronger level.

Saskatchewan’s rate is 6.5 percent, also down three-tenths of a point.
