Snowstorm causing delays at Kamloops Airport

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops Airport is urging travellers to check flight schedules ahead of time, after a number of flights were delayed Friday due to the snow.

Between five and 10 centimetres fell during the day in Kamloops.

At least five flights were delayed due to poor visibility, resulting in longer-than-normal lineups.

“In our case, it was the visibility that really fell down in the lower limits, that doesn’t happen often here but when it does it’s pretty impressive,” said Fred Legace, Manager for Kamloops Airport. “This storm is affecting other airports across Southern B.C. and into Alberta as well so we’ll see systemic delays start to build in, those are going to have an effect as well.”

More than 500 people are expected to travel through the airport en route to their holiday celebrations Friday.

For them, patience is key.

“My flight out of Kamloops is delayed an hour-and-a-half, so I’ll miss my connecting flight, but I’m going to find a way to make it home,” said Kyle Weiss, travelling to New Mexico.

“We are going to Maui,” said one woman. “It hasn’t been too bad because we already checked in so we’re pretty lucky. I think our flights supposed to leave soon but it’s still a little stressful.”

“We just got here from SunPeaks, said Kevin Ward, travelling home to Ontario with the Collingood Alpine Ski Club. “We’ve only been here for 15 minutes now, and it looks like our flights on time, so so far everything’s good.”

With Environment Canada forecasting another five centimetres of snow overnight, Legace says more flight delays are likely.
