KAMLOOPS — An emergency road out of Juniper Ridge is finally complete.

The City of Kamloops says initial work on the road connecting the westernmost-edge of Juniper to Rose Hill Road began two years ago.

However, after seeing the traffic chaos that ensued when thousands of people tried to flee Fort McMurray this spring, the city placed more importance on completing the project.

"We've known for a long time that Juniper has always had one way in and one way out," said Jason Dixon, Building and Engineering Development Manager for the City of Kamloops.

"We realized that in the event of a serious motor vehicle accident or a wildfire or some kind of an emergency, there's no way to get people out of the neighbourhood if that's needed."

Wood says the new route is an old road Fortis BC road used for gas line maintenance.

Workers finished paving the approximately 1.6-kilometre route last week.

Total cost of the project was $15,000.
