KAMLOOPS —   It could have been one of the biggest victories in franchise history. The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack women’s volleyball team swept the visiting and previously undefeated University of British Columbia Thunderbirds 3-0 in Canada West action Friday night (Nov 19). The scores were 25-22,25-18,25-6.

The WolfPack led from wire to wire as they handed the Thunderbirds their first loss of the Canada West Season. TRU was led by Iullia Pakhomenko (5th year, outside hitter, Donetsk, Ukraine). She had 11 kills in 23 chances. UBC’s top offensive threat was Victoria Behie (3rd year, setter, Nanaimo, BC) who had six kills in 19 chances.

Both teams continue the series tonight (Saturday) at the Tournament Capital Centre. Start time is 5:00 PM.

The University of British Columbia Thunderbirds men’s volleyball team has had a tough time winning on Friday nights on the road. Their previous two Friday night road encounters were defeats. They ended that streak on this night (Nov 18) at the Warner Rentals Court at the Tournament Capital Centre in Kamloops. They downed the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack 3-1. The scores were 25-15,25-20,16-25,25-19

The WolfPack battled back from a 2-0 deficit and gave the Thunderbirds a run. UBC was led by Cam Fennema (3rd year, outside hitter, Victoria, BC) who had 12 kills in 25 chances while Irvan Brar (4th year, outside hitter, Surrey, BC) added 10 kills. TRU’s main offensive threat was Daniel Eikeland Rod (5th year, outside hitter, Oz, Norway) with 13 kills. Randy Grundmann (4th year, outside hitter, Winnipeg, MB) added 12.

The men’s and women’s basketball teams both lost on the road. They were in Edmonton to take on the top-ranked University of Alberta. Both men’s and women’s UofA teams are unbeaten so far this year, and that didn’t change Friday night.

In women’s play, the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack had a strong fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough to handle the home town University of Alberta Pandas in Canada West women’s basketball action Friday night (Nov 18) at the Saville Centre. The Pandas won 69-44

The WolfPack outscored the Pandas in the final quarter 16-15. They trailed 35-19 at the half. Emma Piggin (3rdyear, guard, Kamloops, BC) led the way for TRU with 16 points. Elle Henderson was the top gunner for Alberta with 12 points.

The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack mens basketball team came close but not close enough as they opened up a Canada West weekend in Edmonton against the unbeaten Golden Bears. The Bears took the WolfPack 82-79 Friday night (Nov 18) at the Saville Centre.

The WolfPack trailed 34-31 at the half but outscored Alberta 28-22 in the fourth quarter. Luke Morris (4thyear, forward, Mission, BC) led the way with 20 points and seven rebounds . Ivan Ikomey was the top scorer for Alberta with 25 points and three rebounds.
