McDavid, Weber, Marchessault named NHL’s three stars for October

NEW YORK — Edmonton forward Connor McDavid, Montreal defenceman Shea Weber and Florida centre Jonathan Marchessault are the NHL’s three stars for October.

McDavid, the Oilers’ 19-year-old captain, had five goals and seven assists in nine games to power Edmonton to the top of the Pacific Division and Western Conference.

His offensive output included a pair of game-winning goals, which tied him for second in the league.

The Richmond Hill, Ont., native has 60 points 54 career NHL games.

Weber had an outstanding start to his tenure with the Canadiens, leading all defencemen in October with 10 points (four goals, six assists) in nine games to guide the Canadiens to first place in the league standings. The 31-year-old Sicamous, B.C., finished the month leading the league in game-winning goals (three) and plus-minus (plus-12).

The Canadiens acquired Weber in an off-season trade with Nashville that sent defenceman P.K. Subban to the Predators.

Marchessault had six goals, tied for the league lead, and added five assists over nine games for the Panthers. That included a pair of game-winning goals for the 25-year-old from Cap-Rouge, Que.

The NHL also named Toronto Maple Leafs forward William Nylander as rookie of the month.

Nylander, led all rookies with seven assists and 11 points in nine games. He edged teammate Auston Matthews (six goals, four assists), Winnipeg Jets right-wing Patrik Laine (six goals, two assists), Philadelphia Flyers centre Travis Konecny (one goal, six assists) and New York Rangers left wing Jimmy Vesey (five goals, one assist) for the honour.

Nylander also shared the league lead with seven power-play points.
